Production service company in Italy
Courage Production is a production service company in Italy for fashion, luxury and commercial shoots, running around 50 shoots a year across the country from our Milan HQ, with local presence (Location Managers, PAs, Runners, Producers) in every region. Every project starts with the same question: where in Italy does this brief belong? This page answers it region by region, with permit lead times, where crews and equipment come from, and what casting you can find on the ground.
International teams work with Courage Production for the pace. Answers within hours, budgets and options on the table fast, and a team that runs several productions in parallel at the same standard. It is the rhythm a producer in New York or London expects, and the one we keep in every region.
Where are the main filming locations in Italy?
Courage Production matches the location to the brief. Every Italian region has exceptional villas, each with its own character. For water and boats, the lakes: Como, Garda and Maggiore. For cities, Rome, Venice and Milan. For countryside, Tuscany. For sea and coastline, Sicily, the Amalfi Coast, Puglia and Liguria. For snow, the Italian Alps.
Villas are everywhere in Italy, and the region decides the style. Lakeside villas with private docks and formal gardens on Como, Garda and Maggiore. Renaissance villas and stone casali in Tuscany. Baroque villas in Sicily. Masserie in Puglia, fortified farmhouses turned private estates. Cliffside villas with sea terraces on the Amalfi Coast and in Liguria. Frescoed palazzi in Rome, Milan and Venice.
The same campaign can be budgeted differently in Portofino or in Sicily, depending on how far the equipment travels and how long the permits take. The notes below come from shoots Courage Production runs in each area multiple times per year.
Lake Como, Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore
On the lakes, the villa often comes with water access: private docks, boat load-in, and classic Riva boats for the shot. Lake Como is the most iconic, just over an hour's drive from Milan to towns at the southern end like Cernobbio, so the crew can commute daily to set. Public permits take 10 to 15 days, and villa owners need around 5 working days to review a request. Clients often expect instant availability when they pick a villa from our archive decks, so we try to get in touch as soon as we receive a shortlist.
Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore follow the rule of small lakeside towns across Italy: permits in about two weeks, and everything arrives from Milan as there is no production industry on site. Recent work includes Boden on Lake Garda and Tommy Hilfiger eyewear near Stresa.
Cities: Milan, Rome, Venice, Florence
Milan is our base and the center of the Italian fashion and advertising industry, with the largest pool of crews, equipment, models and actors (including kids model agencies) in the country, plus our 320 sqm photo studio and event space. Street permits take about 10 working days. See our Milan location scouting guide.
Rome has Italy's deepest film infrastructure: rental houses, Cinecittà studios, and a large pool of film crew (though it offers only basic photo-focused services and crew). Permit approval takes 21 full working days from the Rome permit office, plus ZTL authorizations, and landmarks like the Colosseum carry image rights fees. Fashion crew and models travel from Milan (where they are based) by high-speed train in about 3.5hrs.
Venice has no roads. Equipment is transported by cargo boat from the mainland terminal at Tronchetto, organized by our team. Public permits take about 15 working days. Our Venetian local team handles the canals, including a main producer based there. Key crew comes from Milan. Assistants and basic services can be sourced there.
Florence works best combined with villas in the surrounding Tuscan hills. City-center permits run on the longest lead times in Italy, so we plan Florence early and propose alternatives in Tuscany when the schedule is tight.
Countryside: Tuscany
Tuscany means villas, stone casali, the Chianti and Val d'Orcia hills, and the white marble quarries of Carrara. There are no commercial rental houses in the region, so equipment travels from Milan or Rome, around a three-hour drive away depending on where in Tuscany the shoot is located. Estate owners are often booked for luxury events and high-end weddings, which is why we open villa negotiations early, especially from May to September. On the coast, Forte dei Marmi and Monte Argentario add the sea, with Argentario easy to reach from Rome.
Sea and coastline: Sicily, the Amalfi Coast, Puglia, Liguria
Sicily is one of the warmest shooting regions in Europe in winter, with coastal days between 15 and 18 degrees from November to March. Baroque villas around Palermo, Noto, Cefalù, then Scopello and the lava fields of Etna. Equipment crosses on the overnight ferry from Naples, Rome or Milan, and local assistant crew works out of Palermo but expect very limited availability and the possibility of bringing key departments from other cities with a low-cost internal flight.
On the Amalfi Coast and in Naples, Positano, Sorrento and Ravello mean vertical logistics: porters carry the equipment down long stairways to villas and beaches. Capri adds the ferry and the island's cart operators, so on tighter budgets we base the shoot on a mainland villa and add a boat day for the Faraglioni.
Puglia means masserie, whitewashed towns like Polignano a Mare, Ostuni, and Mola di Bari, and its limestone coast. Permits take 10 to 15 working days. Video equipment comes from Rome, and photo equipment from Naples or Rome. The technical crew is sometimes available in Bari. Winter works well here: the masserie are less busy with bookings, and the light stays sunny.
Liguria is two hours from Milan, close enough for day-trip shoots in Portofino, Camogli or Sestri Levante, with permits in 5 to 10 working days. The Portofino Park authority needs an additional permit authorization with limits on the sailing area.
Snow and mountains: the Italian Alps
The Italian Alps are the answer for winter collections shot in summer. The glaciers at Cervino Plateau Rosà and Mont Blanc Skyway keep snow year-round above 3,000 meters, while the Dolomites, Seceda and Cortina d'Ampezzo give the vertical peaks. Most alpine locations are two to three hours from Milan, Cortina is closer to Venice. Shoots in national parks need a Nulla Osta, so allow at least 15 days. Local alpine guides and drivers support the unit, everything else travels from Milan.

How our production service works across Italy
Courage Production runs every shoot in Italy from a main base: Milan. Milan is the center of fashion and advertising production, with the strongest pool of photographers, directors, DoPs, digital technicians and stylists, and the main photo and video rental houses. Rome is the center of Italian cinema, with deep film crews and film equipment. Outside these two cities, the high-end crew and the equipment travel to set.
In every region, we add a local layer: location managers, production assistants, drivers and runners who know the permit offices and the roads. Heads of department travel, support roles stay local. The standard stays the same in every region, and travel costs go only on the roles that need it.
A fixer or a fully local micro-production can look cheaper on paper, especially in the south. The difference shows in pre-production: replies that take days, small teams that can only handle one or two jobs a month, and crews below the standard an international brand expects. Courage Production keeps support roles local, so the budget stays competitive with a local quote, while producers and heads of department work to the pace and standard of an international set.
One producer runs the job end to end. Budget is aligned with Italian crew rates and regulations, location scouting and archive decks, permits and drone clearance, crew and equipment, vans, boats and camera cars, and talent logistics for celebrity campaigns.
Production FAQ: Italy
Where does Courage Production operate in Italy?
From our HQ, we operate nationwide across all main shooting regions: Lake Como, Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, the Italian Alps, Liguria, Venice, Tuscany, Rome, Puglia, the Amalfi Coast and Naples, and Sicily. Equipment and key crew travel from Milan and Rome, the two main industry bases, to all other regions.
Do you provide film production services in southern Italy?
Yes. Courage Production runs photo and film production services across southern Italy: Sicily, Naples, the Amalfi Coast and Capri, and Puglia. Film equipment travels from Rome, the closest film rental base, or from Milan or Naples. Local crews in Palermo, Naples and Bari cover support roles, and winter is a good season to shoot in the south.
Each region has its own logistics: the overnight ferry for Sicily, porters and island ferries on the Amalfi Coast and Capri, long rural distances between masserie in Puglia. Key crew travels from Milan or Rome to keep the same standard on every set.
Is winter a good season to shoot in Italy?
Yes, especially in Southern Italy. Sicily has some of the best winter weather in Europe for commercial shoots, with daytime temperatures typically between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius from November through March, stable Mediterranean light, and significantly fewer crowds at major locations. We regularly schedule Spring/Summer fashion campaigns in Southern Italy during winter months, when permit lead times are also faster.
How long does it take to get a film permit from the Comune in Italy?
Two weeks is the standard lead time across most Italian Comuni for public ground occupation permits (O.S.P.) for commercial film and photo shoots. Smaller towns and rural municipalities often process permits faster (5 to 10 working days). The two main exceptions are Rome and Florence, where lead times extend to 20 to 30 days due to higher volume and stricter coordination across multiple offices. Heritage sites, archaeological zones and protected areas (UNESCO sites, national parks) require longer lead times and additional clearance from the relevant Soprintendenza.
What crew and equipment is available in Italy?
Milan is Italy's primary base for high-end commercial and fashion production crew (DoPs, Digitechs, Gaffers, Stylists) and equipment rental (Arri, Profoto, Phase One, Sony Venice). Rome is the primary base for cinema and film production. Outside these two cities, high-end crew and equipment are sourced from Milan or Rome and transported to location. Local assistants (electricians, second light assistants, extras) can sometimes be found on site.
Where can we find models, actors and extras in Italy?
Courage Production casts most commercial and fashion talent in Milan, which has the largest pool of models, actors, children and extras in Italy. Rome has a large pool of actors and extras thanks to the film industry. In Venice and the southern regions, local children and extras are available, while models come from Milan.
For Lake Como and Liguria, the distance is short enough to bring the whole cast from Milan. In Naples and Sicily, street casting finds characterful local faces that work well for editorial and lifestyle campaigns.
Do you need a film commission to shoot a commercial in Italy?
No. Courage Production files permits for commercial and fashion shoots directly with each municipality. Italy's regional film commissions, such as the Apulia Film Commission or Toscana Film Commission, mainly support feature films, documentaries and series, with funding and location archives.
For advertising and fashion, a film commission can still help with local contacts or access to a specific location, and we work with them when that is useful. Permits, timing and budget remain a production service job.
What is the difference between a production company and a production service company in Italy?
A production company starts and owns the creative project (commercial, TVC, branded content). A production service company manages the on-the-ground logistics for a client's project: permits, scouting, crew, equipment and transport. Courage Production operates as a production service company for international brands, agencies and production companies shooting campaigns in Italy.
Does Courage Production work directly with brands or only with agencies?
We work with international brands that produce their own shoots in Italy, creative agencies managing their clients' campaigns, and production companies headquartered abroad that need an Italian executive partner on the ground. The brief and workflow adapt to the client's structure.
