Film & Photo Production Service Sicily
Courage Production is the film and photo production company managing shoots across Sicily. From Palermo and Catania to historic baroque villages, we handle public permits, location scouting, and crew logistics, backed by Milan HQ technical standards.
Film & Photo Production Company in Sicily
Courage Production is a Sicily production company specialized in film and photo shoots for international fashion and lifestyle brands. We manage the entire logistical chain across the island: location scouting in historical villas and baroque palazzos, street-casting in characteristic coastal towns, public permits in Palermo and Catania, and equipment logistics via overnight ferry from Milan.
Our Sicily production unit works on a hybrid model. Milan HQ deploys key crew and Heads of Department to guarantee top-tier technical standards. On the ground, our network of Sicilian producers and location managers in Palermo and Catania ensures direct access to private villas, town halls, and rental houses unavailable to remote teams.
Recent productions in Sicily
We regularly produce campaigns across Sicily for international fashion and lifestyle brands. Here are three recent examples of our full-service support:
• Boden Spring Summer Campaign: A complex multi-location shoot moving between a historic villa, pristine beaches, and characteristic town squares. We managed the logistics for rapid company moves, securing permits for street control in narrow village roads.
• Sézane "L'Avventura": Video and photo production set in an iconic historical villa. Our team secured exclusive access to this heritage property, managing on-site catering, equipment logistics and international team transportation
• D-Repubblica (Cover Story): A documentary-style editorial focused on authenticity. We handled locations to find real local spots and scouted vibrant locations like fish markets and small shops to capture the raw, unfiltered Sicilian summer vibe.
Logistics & Production Specs
Sicily allows for extended shooting seasons thanks to its mild winters. We manage logistics through the main international airports (Palermo PMO, Catania CTA, and Trapani) for efficient crew transfers.
Production specs
- Archaeological Sites: Min. 30 Days (Strict permits required for Valle dei Templi, Siracusa, Taormina).
- Street Public Permits: 10-15 Working Days for blocking roads in historic centers like Palermo or Cefalu.
- Equipment: Main camera/lighting packages are trucked from Milan/Rome via overnight ferry.
- Image Rights: Heritage sites like Valle dei Templi require negotiated commercial use clearance with the Soprintendenza.
- Drone Flights: ENAC clearance required, with restricted zones near international airports (Palermo PMO, Catania CTA) and active volcanic areas (Etna).
- Peak Season: April through October. Villa availability decreases, and hotel rates increase, especially during the summer months. Book accommodation 4-6 weeks in advance for better rates.
Why a local Sicily production company matters
Sicily has no professional rental houses for cinema-grade and pro photo equipment. International production teams shooting here for the first time tend to underestimate this aspect, only realising it later when they have already booked a less professional local production and the gear required by their photographer or DoP is not available. With pre-production timings tight and the equipment they need (Arri Alexa, Profoto packs, larger rigs) sitting 1,000 km away in Rome or Milan, the issue snowballs fast.
As a Sicily production company with permanent local crew in Palermo and Catania on top of our Milan HQ rental network, Courage Production trucks main camera and lighting packages overnight via ferry, secures public permits 10-15 working days in advance, and negotiates archaeological site clearances directly with the relevant Soprintendenza.
Verified on recent campaigns including Sézane "L'Avventura" in a private historic villa, Boden Spring Summer across multiple Sicilian locations, and a D-Repubblica cover story shot with photographer Karim Sadli in real Sicilian markets. All productions ran on schedule, with full equipment delivery and zero permit issues.
Heritage Villas & Locations Archive
Our location archive is particularly strong on private residential properties: from baroque palazzos in Palermo to restored "Baglio" farmhouses surrounded by olive groves, and modern villas overlooking the sea. We provide extensive location decks and collaborate directly on your pitches to help your project get awarded.
Beyond private locations, we specialize in shooting in "Borghi" (historic villages). We handle the casting of authentic local faces and secure permits for town squares and narrow streets.
Key filming locations in Sicily
Sicily offers a range of distinct shooting environments, each with its own logistical and permit profile. Below are the locations where Courage Production has managed commercial productions, with the operational notes that come with each.
Villa Tasca (Palermo)
A 16th-century historic villa in the heart of Palermo, recognised globally as one of the sets of HBO's "The White Lotus" Season 2. Drive-in access is available with private parking on site. The property offers extensive frescoed interiors, formal Italian gardens with a romantic lake, and a private orangery. Filming access is negotiated directly with the management. We have managed productions here for international fashion campaigns, coordinating villa permits, on-site catering setups, and crew coordination across the multiple shooting areas.
Villa Valguarnera (Bagheria)
An 18th-century baroque villa just outside Palermo, considered one of the most important historic properties in Sicily. Drive-in access through formal gates, with multiple shooting environments including frescoed salons, private chapel, expansive gardens, and panoramic terraces overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Filming access is negotiated case by case with the management and depends on availability. We have managed fashion campaigns and high-end commercials here, handling everything from permit coordination to set design logistics.
Palermo (Historic Centre)
The Sicilian capital offers some of the most cinematic urban environments on the island: from the Ballarò and Vucciria street markets to the baroque architectures in the Quattro Canti, and the coastal stretch of Mondello beach (20 minutes from the centre). Public permits are enforced in the historic core, requiring O.S.P. coordination through the local Comune. We coordinate the full permit chain, street control, and crowd management for larger shoots.
Scopello and Castellammare del Golfo
A coastal stretch on the western shore famous for the Faraglioni rock formations and the historic Tonnara di Scopello (a former tuna fishery turned iconic film location). Castellammare del Golfo offers a working harbour with traditional Sicilian boats and a medieval castle backdrop. Both locations are accessible by van; permits for the Tonnara go through the property managers and require advance negotiation.
Cefalù
A medieval coastal town on the northern shore, with a Norman cathedral, fishermen's village character, and a long sandy beach framed by the Rocca cliff. Public permits are processed through the local Comune with relatively straightforward lead times. The town centre has narrow streets and pedestrian zones, so logistics require van-based load-in to the closest accessible point. Ideal for fashion campaigns combining urban and beach environments within a single shooting day.
Noto and Ortigia (Siracusa)
The southeastern baroque corner of Sicily. Noto is a UNESCO World Heritage town with honey-coloured baroque architecture and theatrical staircases. Ortigia is the historic island core of Siracusa, with narrow medieval streets, the Duomo built on a Greek temple, and direct sea access. Both are popular for fashion editorials and lifestyle commercials. Public permits are processed through the local Comune; expect tight coordination during peak summer months due to tourist density.
Etna (Volcanic landscapes)
The active volcano on the eastern side of the island offers dramatic black lava fields, surreal moonscapes, and snow-capped peaks visible from December to April. Drive-in access is available up to specific altitude limits. Filming on protected nature reserve areas requires Parco dell'Etna authorization with longer lead times. Ideal for automotive commercials, fashion, and any campaign needing a "Mars on Earth" aesthetic.
Scala dei Turchi (Realmonte)
A white limestone cliff formation along the southern coast, between Agrigento and Porto Empedocle. The chalk-white rock contrasts with the turquoise sea, making it one of the most photographed natural locations in Sicily. Important note: the site has been intermittently closed to the public for environmental protection. Filming access requires direct authorization and depends on the current site policy, which is often updated. We monitor the access status closely and propose alternative coastal locations when the Scala is restricted.
Production FAQ: Sicily
Is camera and lighting equipment available in Sicily?
Professional rental houses are not available in Sicily. For commercial standards, we truck main packages (Arri/Profoto) from Milan or Rome rental houses. We utilize the overnight ferry to transport gear vans efficiently. While this adds a logistic line item, it guarantees technical reliability.
Do we need to fly in the whole crew?
We recommend a "Hybrid" approach to balance budget and quality. We fly in Key roles (DoP, Digitech, 1st AD) from Milan to ensure top-tier workflows. We then staff the support unit (Runners, Drivers, PAs) locally. Sicily also offers excellent resources for Glam assistants and street casting.
Is the production fully local or managed from Milan?
We prioritize a "Smart Local" approach. We have a vetted network of Sicilian professionals to optimize travel costs. However, every shoot is directly supervised by our Milanese Producers to guarantee our specific quality standard. Whether the crew is 100% local or hybrid, the management remains strictly internal to Courage Production.
What is the weather like for shoots in Sicily during winter?
Sicily is one of the warmest regions in continental Europe, making it shootable all year round. Winter daytime temperatures along the coast typically sit between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius, with stable light and significantly fewer crowds at major locations. We regularly schedule fashion and lifestyle campaigns from November through March, when permit lead times are also faster. The only exception is mountainous and volcanic terrain (Etna, inland highlands) where snow and cold conditions apply.
Can we shoot at archaeological sites like Valle dei Templi?
Yes, but lead times can be long. Major archaeological sites such as Valle dei Templi (Agrigento), the Greek Theatre of Taormina, or Siracusa require permits through the Soprintendenza ai Beni Culturali, with minimum 30-day lead times and significant location fees. For projects where the archaeological aesthetic is the goal but timing or budget are tight, we often recommend Segesta as an alternative: equally iconic Greek temple set in dramatic countryside, with a faster permit process and lower fees through the Parco Archeologico di Segesta.
Can we shoot on Etna and is it accessible year-round?
Yes. Etna is accessible year-round, with the volcanic landscape changing dramatically by season. Snow-capped peaks are visible roughly December through April, while the black lava fields and surreal terrain remain shootable all year. Drive-in access is available up to specific altitude points. For shoots within the Parco dell'Etna protected zones, we coordinate directly with the park authority to secure the necessary clearance, especially for drone use or off-road vehicle access.
